Charles entered the US Army at Sioux City Iowa and after Basic Training was sent to Fort Rucker Al (USAAVNS) for training as a 67A10 Aircraft Maintenance Appr. and served as an Air Craft Parts Specialist and as both a Crew Chief and Door gunner in the 135th AHC with had an Australian unit assigned to them.  This was the only unit in Vietnam authorized to wear a Blue Beret.

Charles was released from active duty on February 13, 1972
